Maybe it’s because I woke up this morning and oh, it felt like Fall. I love this time of year, it’s my favorite, but with all the hot weather we’ve been having, it’s felt more like July than late September. But this morning, I crept out to my hot tub and it was like climbing into a vapor steam bath. Ahhh!
Or maybe it’s because this is the 70th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz.
Whatever it is, I’ve got the urge to go totally Kansas — again — and see my friend Holly and the Bongo Girls.
Who would’ve ever thought that 2009 would be the year for not one, but TWO cross-country trips to not just one, but TWO performances by the ever-so-talented Holly and the Bongo Girls?! Yes, I’m packing Payton my dog, my sleeping bag and my toothbrush and heading East in my trusty orange Beetle (her name is Ethyl).
Last time, I stopped at several roadside attractions (who can ever forget Prairie Dog Town? )
This time I plan on seeing more sights along the way, like the World’s Largest Watermelon in Green River, Utah http://www.roadsideamerica.com/salad/watermelon.html, The Coney Island Hot Dog Stand in Aspen, Colorado, The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado (that’s where S. King stayed and thought up “The Shining” and yes, you can rent the infamous room 217), The World’s Largest Pecan in Brunswick, Missouri and, of course, the giant shovel Big Brutus in West Mineral, Kansas.
And then the highlight of the trip — Holly and the Bongo girls!
If you can make it, here are the details:
Saturday, October 3 at 7 – 11:30 p.m. at the Holly Reed Studio & Little Room Gallery, just off 5th & Broadway in Pittsburg, Kansas. Just follow your ears!
