It’s the long-awaited return of the band voted “Boise’s Best” seven years in a row: the House of Hoi Polloi is playing Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22 at Visual Arts Collective.
“Yeeewhoooo!,” Steve Fulton, co-founder of the group said. “The time has come for us to reunite and have a night of serious fun! Mark your calendars!”
Fulton and fellow Hoi Polloi band members — Russ Pfeifer, Jamie Vink, Chad Waite and Jason Roark — will perform songs from the band’s extensive play list of more than 60 original tunes, recorded over the course of 11 years, on seven CDs and one cassette. (Many of the band’s various CDs will be available for purchase the night of the show.)
Fulton (from the legendary Boise band the Hi-Tops) and Steve Hall (from The Uninvited) formed the original Hoi Polloi in 1989 in San Diego. The name was changed to House of Hoi Polloi, Chris Wood (from the Smoking Section) signed on and the group recorded their music for the first time on a cassette tape. In 1990, HHP moved to Boise and added band members Ned Evett and H. Emerson Zachary (Zach). In 1992 the group released their first self-titled CD, only the second one ever to be released by a local Boise group.
The band, populated by varying band members, has toured extensively throughout the West and South. HHP performed at SXSW in Austin, NXNW in Portland, the Bumbershoot in Seattle, the River Festival in Boise and at the Neville Brothers at the Pavilion (now Taco Bell Arena). HHP also has shared the stage with Jimmy Cliff, The Beat Farmers, David Lindley, the Smithereens, the Samples and many more.
A Boise favorite, voted “Best of Boise Bands” by the Idaho Statesman, the Boise Weekly and the Idaho Press-Tribune, House of Hoi Polloi has only performed together once since 2002 — on New Year’s Eve, 2007 at the Big Easy (now Knitting Factory) — until now.
“People are always asking me, ‘when are you guys going to get back together?’,” Fulton said, adding that Evett, one of HHP’s originals, will also be on hand to “sit in” on a number or two. “We are back by popular demand. We’ll play on Friday (Aug. 21) — and if that gets sold-out, we’ll add another night, too (Sat. Aug. 22).”
